Vorticism – The New Art.
A guest exhibition of highly unusual wall plaques and standing sculptures by Christian.N.Atkinson in continuance of his grandfather’s art form of the early 1900’s.
Vorticism - born from the effects the industrial revolution had upon a handful of early 20th century artists one of whom was my grandfather, Lawrence Atkinson. My aim now is to continue where Laurence left off. Vorticism came to a sad end when three vorticists were killed in the First World War and the remainder parted ways due to conflicting opinions and old age – Lawrence died in 1931.
I was born on 24/11/1939 in Aldeburgh, Suffolk, England to French and English parents. My father, Peter Atkinson was a photographer in W.W.2. My mother, Therese Ferry, was related to Jules Camille Ferry, twice French prime minister (1880’s).
I began art seriously about 1962, illustrating book covers, videos and weekly magazines. I then went on to sculpting and designing before taking up portrait painting. I have painted thousands of faces all over the world – sheriffs, mayors, lawyers, teachers and company directors. I also paint landscapes, still life, horses, swans, nudes and abstract. I have exhibited in Europe and the U.S.A. I am now taking up where my grandfather left off, in the continuation of vorticism.
Lawrence Atkinson has work on permanent exhibition in the Tate Modern, London.
Exhibition runs from 2nd– 26th May
